The Colt Manufacturing Company was founded in 1847 by Samuel Colt. In the early years Colt produced revolvers and developed firearms for the Army. Out of this development came the famous "Colt .45" single-action revolver. With a revolving cylinder holding six round the .45 became the standard issue military service revolver.

The .45 was taken to the next level with M1911 single-action semi-automatic pistol designed by John Browning. The M1911 became the standard issue handgun for the US Armed Forces from 1911 - 1985.
